High Density PU Trim: Why Material Density Matters for Durability

The density of PU trim is one of the most important specifications for durability. A higher density PU (200+ kg/m³) is more impact-resistant, more dimensionally stable, and longer-lasting than a lower density PU (under 150 kg/m³). The density specification is worth checking on every order.

The impact resistance is the most visible benefit. A higher density PU doesn't dent when struck by a vacuum cleaner, a chair, or a piece of furniture. A lower density PU dents, and the dent is visible in the finish. For high-traffic applications (commercial corridors, hotel rooms, public spaces), high density is the right specification.

The dimensional stability is the second benefit. A higher density PU doesn't expand or contract as much with temperature and humidity changes. The joints stay tight, the miters stay closed, and the finish stays intact. For applications with variable humidity (bathrooms, kitchens, basements, coastal climates), high density is the right specification.

The detail reproduction is the third benefit. A higher density PU holds the fine details of the mold better than a lower density PU. The crispness of the profile, the sharpness of the corners, and the depth of the relief are all better in a higher density PU. For applications where the detail is important (ornate cornices, classical columns, developed moldings), high density is the right specification.

The lifecycle is the fourth benefit. A higher density PU lasts longer than a lower density PU, because it's more resistant to impact, more stable dimensionally, and more resistant to environmental degradation. The lifecycle cost of a higher density PU is lower than the lifecycle cost of a lower density PU, because the higher density PU doesn't need to be replaced.

For sourcing, the right conversation with the factory is about the density specification. The factory should be able to provide a density value (in kg/m³ or lb/ft³) and a test method (typically ASTM D1622 or equivalent). A factory that publishes density and test methods is a factory that has its quality system in order.

A practical note on the cost. High density PU is more expensive than low density PU, because of the higher material cost and the longer production time. The cost difference is typically 10 to 30%, and the cost is worth the investment for high-traffic, high-impact, and high-detail applications.

A practical note on the right density for the right application. Low density (under 100 kg/m³) is suitable for highly ornate profiles that need every detail to come out sharp, in low-traffic applications. Medium density (100 to 200 kg/m³) is suitable for most residential applications, with a balance of detail, weight, and impact resistance. High density (200+ kg/m³) is suitable for commercial applications, high-traffic areas, and any application where the trim is likely to take abuse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is your factory MOQ?

A: MOQ depends on the product line: stock cornice and skirting profiles start at 200 linear meters per shipment, wall panels at 50 square meters, and custom OEM/ODM profiles at 500 linear meters or 1,000 pieces. Sample orders are accepted for most catalog items, with sample fees credited toward the first bulk order.

Q: What are your standard lead times?

A: Stock catalog items ship within 7–15 days of order confirmation. Custom tooling for OEM profiles takes 25–35 days for sample approval plus 20–30 days for bulk production. Air freight from Guangzhou / Shenzhen takes 5–10 days to most major ports; sea freight takes 18–32 days depending on destination.

Q: Do you offer OEM and ODM services?

A: Yes. Our factory offers full OEM (your brand, our tooling) and ODM (your 3D model or sample, our design team reverse-engineers and produces custom tooling) services. We can sign NDAs, work from hand sketches, photographs, or CAD files, and ship samples for approval before bulk production.

Q: What are your payment terms?

A: Standard terms are 30% T/T deposit on order confirmation and 70% balance against a copy of the B/L. For new buyers we also accept 100% L/C at sight. Long-term partners can apply for open-account terms after three successful orders.
