Paintable Polyurethane Molding: Color Matching Tips and Tricks

PU molding is paintable with any quality paint system, but the color matching requires some care. The factory's pre-primer is a specific color (typically off-white), and the topcoat needs to cover the pre-primer uniformly to achieve the specified color.

The first tip is to use the right primer. The factory's pre-primer is a water-based acrylic, and the best topcoat system is a water-based enamel in the same chemistry family. A water-based primer (if a re-prime is needed) and a water-based enamel is the most compatible system.

The second tip is to use enough topcoat. A single topcoat over a contrasting pre-primer may not cover uniformly. Two topcoats are usually needed to achieve a uniform color, particularly for dark colors, bright colors, or colors with poor coverage (yellows, reds, oranges).

The third tip is to use the right sheen. A matte or flat sheen hides imperfections but is less durable. An eggshell or satin sheen is the most popular for PU molding, with a balance of appearance and durability. A semi-gloss or gloss sheen is the most durable and easiest to clean, but it shows imperfections and is more reflective.

The fourth tip is to use a brushed topcoat. A brushed topcoat gets the paint into all the profile details, with the brush forcing the paint into the corners and the relief. A sprayed topcoat is faster but may require back-brushing. A rolled topcoat is the fastest but doesn't get the paint into the details as well.

The fifth tip is to use a sample board. Before committing to a color for a large project, paint a sample board with the proposed color and finish, and look at it in the actual room's light. The color on the sample board may look different from the color in the room, and the sample board prevents an expensive mistake.

For sourcing, the right conversation with the factory is about the pre-primer specification. The factory should be able to provide the primer product (manufacturer, product code, color) so the painter can match the topcoat to the primer. The factory can also supply pre-finished molding in custom colors, which eliminates the on-site color matching entirely.

A practical note on the custom color. A factory pre-finished custom color is the most reliable way to achieve a specific color across a large project. The factory's spray equipment produces a more consistent finish than on-site painting, and the color is matched to a specific paint brand's color system. The cost is slightly higher than pre-primed, but the labor savings and the quality of the finish are worth the investment for large projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is your factory MOQ?

A: MOQ depends on the product line: stock cornice and skirting profiles start at 200 linear meters per shipment, wall panels at 50 square meters, and custom OEM/ODM profiles at 500 linear meters or 1,000 pieces. Sample orders are accepted for most catalog items, with sample fees credited toward the first bulk order.

Q: What are your standard lead times?

A: Stock catalog items ship within 7–15 days of order confirmation. Custom tooling for OEM profiles takes 25–35 days for sample approval plus 20–30 days for bulk production. Air freight from Guangzhou / Shenzhen takes 5–10 days to most major ports; sea freight takes 18–32 days depending on destination.

Q: Do you offer OEM and ODM services?

A: Yes. Our factory offers full OEM (your brand, our tooling) and ODM (your 3D model or sample, our design team reverse-engineers and produces custom tooling) services. We can sign NDAs, work from hand sketches, photographs, or CAD files, and ship samples for approval before bulk production.

Q: What are your payment terms?

A: Standard terms are 30% T/T deposit on order confirmation and 70% balance against a copy of the B/L. For new buyers we also accept 100% L/C at sight. Long-term partners can apply for open-account terms after three successful orders.
